The governance of museums and other heritage institutions must follow best practice guidelines, codes, and standards. Heritage institutions have a number of unique characteristics which demand a specialised approach to learning and practical application. This training workshop makes reference to your institution’s current position and by targeting a future best practice environment. This workshop is highly interactive with delegate participation throughout the workshop.

Learning Outcome

By the end of this training workshop it is expected that the delegates will be able to:

  • Explain the value of corporate governance, with specific focus on the unique nature of heritage institution.
  • Understand and apply the role of ethics in the institution.
  • Understand and apply the external codes, regulations, and standards of modern museum governance.
  • Understand the role of the Board and top management in running a successful museum.
  • Assess the governance issues in the museum, and establish tasks to address these.
  • Create strategic plans, and monitor their implementation, to ensure long-term sustainability of the institution.
  • Develop a culture of transparency, trust, confidence, and accountability.

  • What is corporate governance and why does it matter?
  • What is “organizational health” for museums and how to measure it?
  • What are the respective roles of the Board and top management structures?
  • Board Management best practices – learning from the best museums in the world.
  • The King IV code of corporate governance and the Companies Act.
  • International practices in museum accreditation – meeting minimum standards
  • The ICOM Code of Ethics and the SAMA PSTI.
  • Associated legislation: PFMA, MFMA, BBBEE, POPI, NHRA, OHSA, CIA.
  • Ethical situations and recommended practices in museums.
  • Sustaining the institution and protecting the collections.
  • Risk management practices.
  • Policy development: what are needed, what should be documented, the risks of now having policies and associated procedures.
  • Board administration and record-keeping.
  • Addressing fairness, accountability, and transparency.
  • How to write/review guiding statements: Statement of Purpose, Mission, Vision and Value statements, to ensure that these are realistic and meaningful.
  • Developing strategy using the SMART objectives – establishing measurement structures using KPAs and KPIs.
  • Financial accountability and GRAP 103, internal and external auditing.
  • Compliance requirements.
  • Media and communications management.
  • Corporate citizenship and stakeholder engagement and management, including with Friends of the Museum.
  • Practical work on selected topics.
  • A Call-To-Action for each museum board and top management structure to address the post-workshop tasks as identified during the workshop.

Dr Roger Layton has almost 50 years experience in IT and 15 years in heritage. He is committed to ensuring eternal access to heritage and provides guidance to all types of heritage institution.

Roger has been training in the museum and heritage field for more than 8 years and have developed all of the training materials used within the company. He is also the innovator for new training needs, and is busy with a new series of workshops on the “Fourth Cultural Revolution” (4CR) as the counterpart to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IC).
